88 piece Silver Lamerie Pattern Boxed Canteen of Cutlery, London 1919 by D & J Wellby

The Service

We are pleased to be offering a wonderful chance to own an excellent boxed set of silver cutlery in the highly desirable Lamerie Pattern, named in honour of the greatest of all English silversmiths, Paul De Lamerie.  This service provides for 12 people using a traditional seven piece place setting with additional serving items.

All the spoons, forks and servers in this canteen were made in London 1919 by the premier retailers D&J Wellby. The knives were added at a later date and bear appropriate hallmarks to the silver handles for Sheffield 1974/75 by Roberts & Belk and are fitted with stainless steel blades.

Lamerie Pattern

This flatware pattern is named in honour of the most important English silversmith Paul De Lamerie. Of Huguenot descent, de Lamerie was born in 1688 and apprenticed to the important silversmith Pierre Platel in 1703. Following his freedom, he entered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall London in 1713 and from then until his death in 1751 Paul de Lamerie made some of the most important and prestigious piece of silver for both royal and noble clientele.

Paul de Lamerie did not produce a huge amount of silver flatware, but amongst his creations was Hanoverian Thread Shell & Drop pattern which was supplied to the Royal household. In more recent times, this pattern has since been re-named Lamerie Pattern.

This canteen is attractively supplied in a green felt lined wooden box, with individual slots for each spoon and fork. The knives are later in date and so do not fit in the box but instead are in two cutlery rolls that can sit in a vacant space alongside the two sauce ladles. The box measures approx. 52cm x 38cm x 22cm (20.5” x 15” x 8.75”) and retains its original key.
