Silver card cases were a prerequisite for house guests during the 19th century so that the visitor could hand over their card on arrival.
Card cases made a personal statement and were often elaborately decorated with engravings or embossed designs. The castle-top series are especially desirable and feature famous landmarks that would have been visited by wealthy tourists following the advent of the railways and purchased as souvenirs.
