The Service

We are pleased to be offering a rare opportunity to purchase an Irish-made canteen that was originally commissioned by the businessman and racehorse owner JP McManus.

The service is inspired by designs found in the famous Book of Kells with zoomorphic depictions in the Celtic style. It was made by Newbridge Silverware and housed in its original military style chest.

The set provides for a full formal table service with eleven pieces per 12 place settings, a set of four serving spoons, a three-piece carving set and an assortment of other serving knives/trowels. The sets of table and dessert knives have silver handles with stainless steel blades that are engraved “Newbridge”.

Every piece is hallmarked for Dublin 2005 and bears the sponsor’s mark of Newbridge Silverware. The service is presented in a wooden box with four drawers.

Provenance

As described in the enclosed leaflet (see final photo), this pattern was only made in Sterling silver for JP McManus to give to favoured clients, friends and family. This particular service was given to the late John O’Reilly, the legendary golf caddy, who organised the JP McManus Pro-Am golf events in the 1990’s early 2000’s. Although cherished by his family, the serviced has never been used and indeed the pieces were still contained in their original plastic sleeves when brought to us.

Presentation

This canteen is supplied in its original military style chest. There are four drawers with all the table and dessert knives in the top drawer, the fish eaters, carving sets and most knife servers in the bottom drawer and all other pieces spread between the middle two. Although adequately serving its purpose, the box interior is quite basic in design. The exterior of the box has two brass carrying handles and brass strengtheners to each corner.
