Salt Cellars (pair) - Pierced Navette-shape with Blue Glass Liners - London 1789 by Hester Bateman - 8.7cm x 5.8cm; 5cm high; 94g silver; 284g combined gross weight - GK/2663
These are a handsome pair of Georgian silver salt pots made by the highly esteemed Hester Bateman.
Navette-shape in form with pretty piercing and engravings, these good-sized salts stand on four legs and are fitted with removable blue glass liners for ease of cleaning and to protect the silver from the corrosive effects of salt. Both are engraved with a crest within an oval cartouche and clearly stamped to the underside with full sets of London hallmarks that include the sought-after "HB" in script maker's mark for the Queen of English Silversmiths.
They are in overall excellent condition with some salt staining to the insides which cannot be seen once the glass liners have been inserted.
