Silver snuff boxes catered for the mainly male tradition of taking snuff and maintaining the tobacco in an air tight container to prevent it from drying out. They can be separated into two main forms: pocket boxes that were large enough to hold a day’s worth of snuff and larger table boxes (or mulls) from which snuff was shared after a meal.
